Introducing the very first home available within Burnt Mill Settlement - the Timothy Wells House
This home is a fitting example of a Georgian style home, one of the earliest classical home designs built in America. The style was rigid in its symmetrical conformation, but a host of architectural details rooted in the European classical tradition allowed a pleasing array of architectural presentations that often were distinctive to region. The biggest variations were from North to South where materials were often dictated by climate. In New England, examples can be found in almost every town and village, and many fine examples were built up and down the Maine coast.
Our Timothy Wells House is a replication of a New England Georgian home, the Wells-Thorn house originally built in 1747 and still standing in Olde Deerfield, Massachusetts. The house is often described as one of the best examples of Seventeenth-century Georgian architecture in America. The style exudes a simple and lasting elegance that defined high-style in its day and still does. Its modillion cornice, crown mould window caps, twelve-over-twelve windows, slightly projecting gable overhang, all encompassed within the scale of classically ordered architecture make this house an exquisite example of revered architectural beauty.
Of course, while the timeless beauty of an exterior is evident in a proper historic exterior, lifestyles dictate interior layout and amenities, and today’s lifestyles are vastly different from those of two hundred years ago. And so the Timothy Wells house features an interior layout that graciously accommodates a modern family’s living requirements, along with other modern amenities such as high efficiency energy strategies throughout, a modern kitchen that reflects the character of timeless architecture but incorporates all of today’s technologically-advanced appliances and design efficiencies, bathrooms that are elegant and practical, and built-ins and finish work that are tastefully inspired and appropriately appointed.
This first house will set a tone and character for the rest of Burnt Mill Settlement which will be a place where excellence in historic architectural replication will define it as a new place with an old idea; simple gracious elegance. And the satisfaction of owning architectural elegance from the past is further enjoyed through the immediate and significant equity gain of owning fine architecture.
